Well photoshop is simply THE photo editting program there is. It can do everything. You can draw in it, (although i recon Paint tool SAI for tablet drawings) you can shop photo's, you can do graphic design. Whatever your heart desires.

I don't really use Photoshop for anything else besides making avatars and signatures.
Maybe once I start making movies I can put Photoshop to a little better use.

If you unsure about what photoshop is like try this
http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_p ... p_portable
It's GIMP [GNU Image Manipulation Program], it's build for Linux but this is a Windows version and it's portable so it won't leave traces on your computer. It's also free and is just as good as Photoshop. I use then for photo editing but I was the version that came with Ubuntu 8.10.

Would you not be better using Adobe Premier for movie making.

what makes it portable? and is it any better than just regular GIMP 2.4.7 ?

It doesn't install onto the computer as a normal program it is designed to sit on USB Flash Drives and runs from them too. The don't appear on the add/remove programs or the start/orb menu and can only be erased by deleting the entire folder. Look
here
When opened it does not copy any files to the host hard drive and leaves no trace of the program. It would just be the as the normal GIMP without any change.
There are loads of different programs on the site, for college I use Firefox Portable and Pidgin Portable or Web browsing and IM'ing
