yeah i feel no disrespect to Tom, I think hes an excellent guitarist and he's doing a good job. But yes his guitar tone could be a little heavier. I've only heard him screw up once, and that was the first time he did the Hell Song at Music Plus i think it was. He bummed like two notes in the solo.
the solo riff right before teh last chorus is playing right now and i think what it needs is more bass...its sounds too tinny. It just needs more balls and Sum 41 is ready to go.
What do you think of the "new" Sum 41 Sound?

i don't know much about guitar stuff, but im pretty sure that it's the guitar's tone, not the guitar tones that made it lighter.Gunner wrote:I don't know how much the tone has changed since late 2007, but the Tom's tone for Over My Head during Summer Sonic was terrible.

So yeah, it's different considering those two performances. The riff for Over My Head was meant to have a chunky tone. I don't think Tom's a crappy guitar player, in fact he's doing a great job. It's his guitar tone I don't like.

Re: What do you think of the "new" Sum 41 Sound?
Well, yeah, i dont think anyone here thinks that Tom is shit, in fact, he's a great guitar player and we all respect him. He does a great job playing all these Sum songs and thats great.
But yeah, he's guitar's tone is just annoying and maybe it could be good just like that, but compared to their old shows with Dave its just not the same and a lot of songs like the riff in Over My Head just lose its true sound and meaning.
So basically, yeah, their old sound with Dave was great and the problem now is that we just gonna compare Tom's sound to Dave's no matter what, so that just makes us all think their old sound is great and Tom's is shit, but to be honest, something in his guitar's tone is just isn't the Sum 41 sound, maybe its cuz Dave used more kinda heavier metal settings when using his distortion or pedals, i dunno.

yeah the sound has gotten lighter i think. regarding tom, he's a decent player but stuff like the 88 ending after motivation really annoys me cos he doesnt play the cool lead riffs/special effects stuff that dave use to play (and also on chuck album) and instead just plays what deryck is playing.

I mean you can actually "see" that the sound is totally different. Just look at the pickups of their guitars. There are no BBQ Humbuckers any more on the guitars. A simple proof that the tone has changed a lot. And with UH Sum 41 really turned into a "just another" anything, 'cause they're just following the commercial path of success.

Too twangy, thats the only problem. everythings great except the guitar tone is shit. if they beefed it up like it used to be it'd be perfect.

I don't mind Tom at all . It's just different that Dave's gone . Ofcourse it's new and wierd , but it just takes some getting used too . I think we'd prolly whine about it too, when Tom would be the lead guitarist who left and Dave would have to replace him .
But i haven't seen them live with Tom though.

I think you are totally right. The drums sound all muted, esp. Kick and snare have almost no energy. Deryck's guitar is usually barely audible and Tom's guitar doesn't have the lead guitar sound. Their current live sound engineer really does a bad job. Bass and vocals are okay, but for a band on their level that can't good enough. I think their sound was a lot better when touring for DTLI and Chuck.

I don't mind it too much, but I'd rather have the old tone-but wouldn't everyone?
