DERYCK INTERVIEW !!!!!!! SUM 41 FRANCE

Post by DW_60 »

Sum 41 France present:

"cool. i put my answers in caps lock beside your questions. sorry for any spelling mistakes, i didn't proof read it.
thanks for the questions.
deryck

Question:
Tom is now an official member of Sum 41, but you didn't clearly announce this. You just show him on a photoshoot and interviews. You talked about it in Q&A but the question has been removed. Why did you chose to not announce it on a large scale ?

Reponse:
I DIDN'T KNOW THE QUESTION HAD BEEN REMOVED. I NEVER REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT MAKING AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. MAYBE WE WILL WHEN THIS RECORD IS FINISHED.

Question:
And how did the official integration happened ?

Reponse:
WELL TOM HAS JUST BEEN VERY CLOSE FRIEND OF OURS AND HE WORKS VERY HARD. WE ALL LOVE WHAT HE DOES AND FEEL HE'S EXTREMELY TALENTED. HE REALLY IS JUST THE PERFECT FIT FOR US.

Question:
Isn't Tom too busy now that he's more active with Sum 41 ? No problems with time table ?

Reponse:
HA HA. YOU'D HAVE TO ASK HIM THAT. WE'RE TOO BUSY WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT. NONE OF US EVER STOP!

Question:
The album is born from the creation of a EP. Why ?

Reponse:
WELL MY INTENT WAS JUST TO MAKE AN EP TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN ALBUMS BECAUSE I KNEW IT WOULD TAKE A WHILE TO GET A NEW RECORD OUT. BUT WHEN THE EP WAS DONE AND I LISTENED TO THE WHOLE THING I FELT IT WAS TOO GOOD TO JUST BE AN EP, AND IF KEPT WRITING, MAYBE I COULD HAVE AN ALBUM DONE SOONER THAN I THOUGHT. SO I'VE JUST BEEN WRITING AND DEMOING A BUNCH OF SONGS. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT WE HAD TO DO A BUNCH OF TOURING THIS YEAR WHICH PUSHED MY WRITING ASIDE AND NOW I HAVE TO PICK IT BACK UP AGAIN AND GET BACK INTO IT.

Question:
The coming out of the Album is getting later and later, does it means that you are recording new songs, that you're refining your work or are you just late ?

Reponse:
WELL AS I KEEP WRITING THE SONGS KEEP GETTING BETTER SO I WANTED TO JUST STAY ON THIS ROLL. WE'RE GETTING CLOSE THOUGH I THINK. I HOPE TO BE RECORDING THE REAL ALBUM HOPEFULLY SOON.

Question:
Now that Tom is on the band, will he record guitar tracks ? And voices ?

Reponse:
WELL THE WAY IT ALWAYS WORKED, EVEN WHEN DAVE WAS IN THE BAND IS THAT I DID THE MAJORITY OF GUITARS AND VOCALS. TOM DOESN'T LIVE NEAR US. NOT TO SAY HE WON'T PLAY ON IT AT ALL BUT I THINK I WILL PLAY MOSTLY EVERYTHING SINCE IT'S THE WAY I LIKE TO DO IT. THE REASON IS, WHEN SOMEONE WRITES SOMETHING THEY USUALLY WANT IT PLAYED A CERTAIN WAY. AND I HAVE VERY STRONG FEELINGS ON HOW I WANT MY RIFFS TO SOUND AND SINCE I CAN PLAY THEM I'D RATHER JUST DO IT MYSELF, IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE. DAVE WAS A GREAT SOLOIST WHICH IS WHY AROUND DTLI ERA I JUST GAVE HIM ALL THE SOLOS TO PLAY EVEN IF I HAD WRITTEN SOME OF THEM.

Question:
How do you compose for this album ? With which steps ? And who works on the composition ?

Reponse:
WELL IT'S KIND OF THE WAY IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. I LOCK MYSELF IN A ROOM FOR A PERIOD OF TIME ALONE AND THEN SONGS COME OUT. SOME ARE GOOD SOME ARE BAD. THEN I DECIDE WHICH ONES I FEEL ARE THE STRONGEST AND THEN I SEND THEM TO THE REST OF THE BAND. THEY LEARN THEM, THEN WE GET TOGETHER AND PRACTICE THEM, THEN GO INTO THE STUDIO TO RECORD THEM. SOMETIMES WRITING IS REALLY EASY FOR ME AND SOMETIMES IT'S TORTURE.

Question:
What are the thematics for the lyrics ?

Reponse:
I'M STILL NOT QUITE AT THAT PART YET BUT I DO HAVE A LOT OF WORDS AND LINES WRITTEN AND A FEW THEMES FOR CERTAIN SONGS. BUT THEY HAVEN'T QUITE TAKEN SHAPE YET SO I CAN'T REALLY DESCRIBE THEM. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT SO FAR EVERYTHING I'VE WRITTEN ABOUT HAS BEEN SOMETHING COMPLETELY NEW THAT I'VE NEVER TALKED ABOUT BEFORE. I'M SURE AT THE END OF THE DAY THERE WILL BE SOMETHING THAT I'VE SANG BEFORE BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY. I'M JUST NOT THAT FAR YET.

Question:
It seems now that the work is well avanced, so how would you define this record ? You talked about a dark, speed and agressive one, has this direction been kept ?

Reponse:
YES. DEFINITELY. IT'S REALLY AGGRESSIVE BIG SOUNDING RECORD. IT'S VERY GUITAR HEAVY. IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE ANY OF THE OTHER RECORDS WE'VE DONE, BUT STILL SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING THAT COULD COME OUT OF SUM41, IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE. I'D SAY IT TAKES OFF WHERE CHUCK ENDED BUT TAKES EVERYTHING TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. IT REALLY DOESN'T SOUND ANYTHING LIKE CHUCK OR DTLI, BUT IF YOU LIKE THOSE RECORDS I DON'T SEE WHY YOU WOULDN'T LIKE THIS. BUT AGAIN, AT THE END OF THE DAY IT'S NOT FINISIHED YET AND THAT'S ALSO JUST MY OPINION.

Question:
Stevo talked about an accordion solo of Tom. We all know that Stevo's humour is stupid but it says true things. So what about this solo ?

Reponse:
SO FAR THAT HASN'T HAPPENED BUT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE I GUESS. IF IT WORKS IN A SONG I'M NOT AGAINST THE IDEA. BUT IT WOULD REALLY HAVE TO SUIT THE SONG.

Question:
We heard about a song that Cone wrote during Underclass Hero's session where he sung, but it never has been released. Will this one be on the new album ?

Reponse:
NO I DON'T THINK THAT SONG WILL FIT ON THIS RECORD. THAT SONG HAS STILL NEVER BEEN FULLY COMPLETED YET. MAYBE WE'LL RELEASE IT AS A B-SIDE OR SOMETHING.

Question:
Same question for the song that you wanted to put on your MySpace. And why couldn't you put this one on MySpace ?

Reponse:
I WANTED TO PUT IT UP BUT NO ONE WOULD LET ME. SOMETIMES CONTRACTS GET IN THE WAY OF WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

Question:
In which Era of 2010 do you think this record will come out ?

Reponse:
IT'S TOO HARD TO SAY NOW BUT I CAN PROMISE YOU WE'RE DOING OUR BEST TO GET IT DONE AND OUT ASAP!"

I really like the words "Guitar Heavy". Even if it won't sound like DTLI? or Chuck.

i hope they do a polka song with the accordion. :devious: that'd be awesome, assuming that Tom can actually play the accordion.

THE EP WAS ALREADY DONE
Children of the beast embrace,
To scorn and the human race,
Consume the light that hugs the earth,
And aid the womb in giving birth,
To a group that will appear,
And guide you through this final year,
The dark armies then will come,
When the sum is 41

Its so weird that I love UH, when the majority doesn't..lol... I love all their music and I'm glad they are keeping with the path of not doing the same sounding album, trying something new, but still Sum41
