If the guitar is making a wall of distorted noise, there's no point playing a funky bassline cuz it won't fit. If you're playing a clean/overdriven guitar sparingly, then the bass gets a bit more headroom. Music shouldn't be messy.

Is there anyone you want to sound like in particular? YOu could possibly make a search for their Signature Custom guitar if they have one and find out what pickups they put into their guitar. Or better yet, ask the music shops.
